An Unfolded Swiss Special Poster (measures 26 1/4" x 37 1/4" [67 x 95 cm]) (Learn More)

Arbeitersale Engelhof (literally translates to "Engelhof Workers Sale"), the circa 1910s Swiss poster promoting entertainment, games, newspapers, magazine and educational courses which were available at the Engelhof building in Basel, Switzerland. Starting in 1875, an organization of philanthropists built a Christian hospice, which was primarily intended to provide a place to stay for wandering craftspeople. An employment agency was also set up to find jobs for journeymen. A little later, workers' halls were set up in which evening courses (such as bookkeeping or English) were held or guests were invited to games and entertainment (especially on Sundays). There was also a reading and writing room and a library. Every day between 100 to 300 people visited the Engelhof, and two thirds came from abroad. The Christian orientation was underlined by the fact that on leaving, all hostel residents were given a small prayer book. Note that this poster features art of a man giving another man directions to the building.
If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this Swiss poster!

Condition: very good. The poster was never folded. It had a few tiny tears and tiny paper loss in the bottom border.
