An Original Vintage Unfolded French World War I Poster (measures 31" x 45 3/4" [79 x 116 cm]) (Learn More)

Journee Du Poilu (roughly translates to "Days of the Soldier"), the 1915 French World War I (WWI) Home Front poster encouraging people to donate to the French war efforts. Poilu (which literally meant "hairy") was also French military slang for a soldier, and many posters were created to promote these fundraising days.
Artist: Theophile-Alexandre Steinlen
Important Added Info: The poster was placed on to a very thin linen backing shortly after being printed. The purpose was to reinforce the poster, so that it would survive, when it was used, so that it would survive when it was put up on walls and taken down. Such posters can be professionally removed from the original thin linen and placed on to a proper linen backing. I have done this to several such posters, and they end up looking wonderful (although they of course can be left as they are).

Condition: fair to good. The poster was mounted on to a thin linen (see above). It has paper loss in the left border and in the top left corner (both in the poster itself and in the linen). It has significant water staining in the back of the linen scattered down the left 6-8", but fortunately it does not have much effect on the front. If I owned this poster I would surely have it removed fro the thin linen and properly linenbacked, and afterwards it would display great. But bear in mind its defects and the cost of restoration before bidding on this poster.
