8z092 LAND OF PROMISE Italian 40x82 1913 art of two men in love with the same woman, ultra rare!

An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Italian Movie Poster (measures 39 1/2" x 81 1/2" [100 x 207 cm]) (Learn More)

La Terra Promessa (released in English-speaking countries as "The Land of Promise"), the 1913 Baldassarre Negroni Italian silent gold mining romantic love triangle adventure melodrama (a very daring film, because, unlike the vast majority of romantic love triangles of this time, the "triangle" in this movie is NOT a man in love with two women, but rather a woman in love with two men, which was not done in movies at this time, and which caused censorship problems for this movie!) starring Francesca Bertini, Alberto Collo, and Emilio Ghione. Note that Italian actress Francesca Bertini was one of the most successful silent film stars in the first quarter of the twentieth century. Reputedly, in 1915 she earned $175,000, a record for the time, and American star Mary Pickford wouldn't match that until the following year! Bertini is most noted for developing the then new acting technique of playing her characters in a more realistic way (previously, actresses on screen used very heavy emoting). She is only remembered today by major film buffs, but she deserves to be rediscovered!

Important Added Info: Note that movie paper of any kind from this movie is incredibly rare. We have never auctioned even a single movie paper item from this movie until we received this Italian poster, which is a "country of origin" poster for this Italian movie! Also note that this Italian poster was printed in 2 sections designed to overlap.

Note that in the very early days of cinema, it was very easy for movies to be shown in countries other than the one in which they were made. All were silent, and most had little dialog, and what there was transmitted through "inter-titles", which were inserted at the appropriate times. All that had to be done to show a movie in another language was to change the opening credits and the inter-titles! When movies were first exported to other countries, the distributors would simply print additional examples of their poster, but leaving off the title area, and then they would overprint it with the title in the specific language of the country required (as the years went by, and there was more and more of a "foreign" market, those other countries would print their own posters, often with different artwork). In the case of this specific poster, it has been printed with the title in four languages (English, Italian, French, and German) in the bottom area instead of solely the Italian title, so it could be used in all four countries.

Condition: good. The poster has paper loss in the bottom left that slightly affects the words (but it is easy to see what they say). It has stains, tears, pinholes, and tiny paper loss along parts of most folds and in much of the borders. Certainly, this extremely rare poster can be repaired during linenbacking, but bear in mind its defects before bidding.
