An Original Vintage Exhibitor Magazine (measures 9 1/2" x 12 1/2" [24 x 32 cm]; 129 pages) (Learn More) Boxoffice Records Season 1942-1943, the 1943 movie book featuring the top films of the previous years, with lists of the best selling movies, stars, directors, and more! This was a hardcover book published by Boxoffice magazine from at least 1937 through 1943. Each year's edition had a hyphenated year (1937-38, etc), and each book listed the movies from that time period that did "better than average", and also those that did "below average", using a scale like an "IQ", where 100 was average, and a number below that was below average, and a number above that was above average! Interestingly, they also rated actors, directors, producers, and writers, with the same scale. This makes for fascinating reading, because you can clearly see which movies did the best by far (like This is the Army, which had an astounding 246 rating, no doubt due to Americans being gung-ho for movies about World War II, and Yankee Doodle Dandy, with a 186 rating, and many others were between 135 and 175, which shows how popular movies were during those early years of World War II). And they did the records for the actors, writers, directors, and producers by averaging the movies they had made that year (if they made more than one), so those directors, like Michael Curtiz, who directed four movies that year, which included Casablanca, Yankee Doodle Dandy, and This is the Army, had an overall astounding rating of 183, and he was closely followed by H.C. Potter, who directed Mr. Lucky and Victory Through Air Power! In addition to the many lists, there are also ads for stars, movies, and directors, paid for by their studios or by the stars themselves. Until we were consigned three different volumes of this in 2020, we had never before auctioned even one of these, so they are surely incredibly rare, and we have additionally been consigned a single volume from 1942-43! The cover price of this book was $1, as indicated in the first interior page. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Important Added Info: Note that we have provided a picture of the front cover of the magazine, and also pictures of one or more interior two-page spreads (but we didn't make much effort to find the best ones!). These images should greatly help you judge the overall condition of the magazine. Please realize that sometimes there were only a few ads in each magazine, and sometimes quite a few, but that often the bulk of each magazine is taken up by stories about current productions and other information of interest to theater owners (and I don't know that this information can be found anywhere else or that it has been reproduced in any book since its first publication!). Please know that these magazines are sealed in bags and are ready for shipping, and we cannot answer any questions about them or look through them for you, so please bid (or do not bid) based on the images we have provided. Condition: good to very good. Note that we checked every page of this magazine and it is complete and uncut. Most exhibitor magazines show clear signs of wear because they were used by exhibitors to decide what movies to order. We have provided an overall description of the condition of the magazine, and also several images of interior pages, plus the cover, and those will help you to judge the condition of this magazine.
