(Learn More) Carl Laemmle Sr. was a legendary German-born entrepreneur who founded Universal Pictures in 1915, and was responsible for the many of the great successes that studio had in the 1920s. He brought his son, Carl Laemmle, Jr., into the business, By the 1930s, his son gained control of the studio. But he spent too much money on too many movies, and the studio was in rocky financial shape, and in the mid 1930s, the board of directors forced both father and son out of the studio, and neither made another movie! Laemmle Sr. passed away in 1939 at the age of 72. Important Added Info: Note that this letter has been personally autographed (signed) by Carl Laemmle Sr.! It was sent by Carl Laemmle Sr. to Paul Kohner asking him for translation help, and stapled to the letter is a carbon copy of Kohner's response. Note that this item comes from the estate of Paul Kohner, who had a remarkable life! Kohner was born in Czechoslovakia in 1902, and he was a journalist working at his father's newspaper. He came to Hollywood after interviewing Carl Laemmle, who gave him a job as a publicity man. He became the head of Universal's European department in Berlin, and returned to the U.S. in the early 1930s, and left Universal in 1938, becoming a publicity agent. Among his clients were some of the greatest film stars ever, including Greta Garbo, Ingrid Bergman, and also great directors such as John Huston and Billy Wilder. He had close personal friendships with many of his clients, and he saved every bit of correspondence and paper work from his agency! He was married to actress Lupita Tovar from 1932 until his death in 1988. Amazingly, after his death, few institutions showed interest in his immense files, and only a small amount ended up being saved, with a lot literally thrown away! Our consignor purchased the item offered here from Mr. Kohner's estate in 1989, and he has held it until now, when he has consigned several items from Mr. Kohner's estate to eMoviePoster.com, and each item is being auctioned separately. UPDATED 02/12/2013: Note that we initially believed that this letter was signed by Carl Laemmle Jr. However, we have discovered another letter on the same letterhead and with the same signature that is attributed to Carl Laemmle Sr.! While we cannot be 100% certain, we now believe that the letter we are offering here is actually from Carl Laemmle Sr. and NOT Carl Laemmle Jr. as we initially listed. We have updated the auction to reflect this. Condition: very good to fine. There is pencil writing in the top center of the letter and some minor wear around the edges.
