An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked German Movie Poster (measures 37 1/2" x 55" [95 x 140 cm]) (Learn More) Douaumont (also released as "Douaumont - Die Holle von Verdun" which literally translates to "Douaumont - The Hell of Verdun"), the 1931 Heinz Paul German World War I (WWI) France military documentary. Note that the Battle of Verdun is one of the best remembered battles of World War I, resulting in massive fatalities on both sides, with almost half a million men killed (around 2:1 German to French). Even though Germany officially won the battle, the losses that they suffered contributed to them eventually losing the war. Douaumont is the largest fort defending Verdun. This German movie showed the horrors of this battle, and the only poster from it we have ever seen has a wonderful surreal image of a literal death oozing into the German bunkers! If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is a very rare "country of origin" poster from Germany from before World War II, which we have never auctioned before (it is the one referred to in the description above). There are very few German movie posters from before World War II in existence (because of the massive paper shortages in Germany during World War II), and most of those few are in museums. Note that the poster has an artist's signature on it, but we cannot read it. If anyone knows the name of this artist, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a light paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (it means that the poster must be handled carefully, as the backing does not give it much added strength, but it is similar to having an unrestored poster, and yet it has been properly preserved). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair to good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster had pinholes, tears, and smudges in the borders. It had fairly minor wear on the folds. It had some tiny bits of paper loss scattered throughout, but much more of the tiny bits in the middle right of the image and also in the lower right and lower left. Overall, the poster was in fair to good to very good condition prior to paperbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above. Learn More about condition grades
