An Autographed Letter (measures 5" x 7 1/4"; 1 page) (Learn More)

Basil Rathbone was a popular English stage and screen actor from the 1920s to the 1960s. He is best remembered for playing Sherlock Holmes in the popular series beginning in 1939. Some of his other movies include: The Adventures of Robin Hood, A Tale of Two Cities, The Court Jester (in which he played a comic version of the role he had played many years earlier in Robin Hood), Captain Blood, Son of Frankenstein (in the title role), The Mark of Zorro, The Dawn Patrol, Romeo & Juliet (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film) and If I Were King (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film) to name a few! He passed away in 1967 at the age of 75.
Important Added Info: Note that this item has been personally autographed (signed) by Basil Rathbone! In it Mr. Rathbone thanks David Mallery for his "charming letter", and that he has "a grand feeling" to have his work appreciated, "even if it is the villain". It seems virtually certain he is talking about "Captain Blood", which he had recently made, and he goes on to say that he is sure Mr. Mallery will more enjoy "Romeo and Juliet" and "The Garden of Allah"! It has been glued to a backing paper at the top and bottom of the letter, although there is no glue on the back of the center of the letter. Note that this letter comes from the estate of David Mallery. He was a professor of cinematography at Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia, from the 1960s into the 1990s. He was a founding member of the AFI (American Film Institute), and a member of the Motion Picture Academy. He was a film critic who wrote many reviews for many publications, and hosted a TV show where he interviewed directors, actors, and others involved in the film industry.

Over the years, he developed both working and close personal relationships with many actors, actresses, and directors, including Frank Capra, Charlton Heston and others. We are currently auctioning 24 letters from directors and actors to Mr. Mallery. Almost all of them are written "from one friend to another", and are in no way "stock" replies to "fan letters", and all are personally signed, and some are entirely or partially handwritten. Most have excellent content covering a wide range of subjects, and they are a fascinating glimpse into these celebrities' personal lives!

Condition: very good. The letter has been glued to a backing paper at the top and bottom of the letter, although there is no glue on the back of the center of the letter (see our image).
