An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie 7 3/4" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] Key Book Still (Learn More)

The First Kiss, the 1928 Rowland V. Lee silent family relationship romantic ocean seafaring sailing riches-to-rags melodrama (an incredibly implausible story of a young man whose family was once one of the first families of their seafaring village; he has three shiftless brothers, and he turns to robbing ships in order to finance his brothers' educations so that his family can once again be illustrious; meanwhile, a leading young woman of the town likes him, but calls him 'white trash'; many years go by, and the three brothers are now a minister, a lawyer, and a doctor, and the fourth brother, having accomplished his goal of restoring his family's reputation, pays back everyone he robbed, and turns himself in!; he is tried and convicted, but is paroled into the leading woman's custody!) starring Fay Wray, Gary Cooper, Lane Chandler, Leslie Fenton, and Paul Fix. Note that this is a "lost" film which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist.

Important Added Info: What a wacky candid this is! The snipe on the back explains that Gary Cooper and his co-stars have invented "a new game for lazy people" that involves throwing knives at a target while laying down, and they have strings attached to the knives so they don't have to get up after each round of throwing!

Note that this is one of ten wonderful Gary Cooper stills from the late 1920s and early 1930s that we were consigned, and are auctioning in ten separate auctions. Each comes from the same collection that contained the twenty rare Gary Cooper stills from the same time period that we auctioned in February 2021, and those were truly wonderful stills, and three of them auctioned for over $1,000 each, and the current ten stills include some equally wonderful ones! These stills were purchased by celebrity Johnny Crawford many years ago, when he purchased an incredible collection of stills that also included great early Laurel and Hardy stills (and we also have eight of those in eight separate auctions). Mr. Crawford first came to fame as the son in the TV series "The Rifleman" and later became a band leader loved movies, and early on he collected many stills and lobby cards. These ten rare early Gary Cooper stills were consigned to us from his collection!

Note that this still is a key book still, mounted to a linen backing. Many studios spent extra money to have their most special photos, the key book stills, either backed with linen or printed on a heavy paper, both of which enhanced their durability. They had an extra 1" at the left or top, with punch holes, because of how they were stored. Key book stills are far more rare than regular stills, which has increased their popularity among collectors, since only a few keybooks were manufactured per film, and a key book still is guaranteed to be authentic. Someone trimmed away the extra 1" from the left of the still.

Condition: very good. The left 1" was neatly trimmed off (see above). Otherwise, the still is in nice condition!
