eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result 8t0910 GREAT GUY French 1p 1936 cool different art of James Cagney beating up bad guys! Date Sold 5/25/2021Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original 1938 (from the first release of this movie in France) Vintage Theatrical Folded French One-Panel "Grande" Movie Poster (1p; measures 47 1/4" x 62 3/4" [120 x 159 cm]) (Learn More) Great Guy (released in England as "Pluck of the Irish"), the 1936 John G. Blystone crime thriller ("It's tops in Cagney entertainment"; "James Cagney at his best!"; "From the Johnny Cave Stories in the Saturday Evening Post by James Edward Grant"; about the "New York Department of Weights and Measures", which was in charge of making sure the public didn't get cheated on the weight of goods; Cagney is the brash new head of it, who gets the job after the old head is hospitalized for not "playing ball"; Cagney takes on everyone: the crooks who cheat the public, and the crooked politicians who take bribes to let them do it!) starring James Cagney, Mae Clarke, James Burke, Edward Brophy, and Henry Kolker. Of course, this movie reunited James Cagney with Mae Clarke, the actress that had hit in the face with a grapefruit in Public Enemy! Perhaps this was his way of apologizing to her, by co-starring with her! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that when this gangster movie was released in France, the French distributor surely wanted French audiences to identify with Cagney's 1931 great hit, "The Public Enemy", so they renamed the movie to "Ennemis Public" for its French release (and Mae Clarke, who was famously hit with the grapefruit in The Public Enemy, was again with Cagney). Perhaps there was some sort of lawsuit threatened by Warner Bros, because all the examples of this poster we have auctioned either have an "S" after the "PUBLIC" that was sniped on, or they have an "S" that was either painted on or residue from where a snipe was removed. If anyone knows more about any of this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Condition: fair to good. There is a loose snipe that has the letter "S" that could have been glued at the end of "PUBLIC" in the title (see above). It will be sent together with the poster. Learn More about condition grades
