An Original Vintage Japanese Promo Book (measures 9" x 11 3/4" [23 x 30 cm]; 40 pages) (Learn More) Toho Co., Ltd. is a Japanese film, theater production and distribution company which was founded in 1932 by Ichizo Kobayashi. Outside Japan, it is best known as the producer and distributor of many kaiju and tokusatsu films, the films of Akira Kurosawa, and the anime films of Studio Ghibli. Toho's most famous creation is Godzilla, who is featured in 32 of the company's films. Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra, King Ghidorah and Mechagodzilla are described as Toho's Big Five because of the monsters' numerous appearances in all three eras of the franchise, as well as spin-offs. Toho is one of the four members of the Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan (MPPAJ), and is the largest of Japan's Big Four film studios. Important Added Info: Note that this book comes with a small insert sheet that measures 3 1/2" x 5", that has printed on it "With the Compliments of Toho Company, LTD.", with their Japanese address and phone number printed below that. Note that this cool Japanese promo book, which we have never auctioned before, tells of the extensive holdings of the Toho company. We did not know (and we bet a lot of you did not) that the company's primary business was owning theater chains in Japan and kept expanding their holdings. They started making movies in 1936, but only made around 15 through 1952, but in 1954, they then began making the movies that made the studio legendary all over the world, including Seven Samurai and Godzilla! This book (which predates that massive increase of movie making) has lots of images of theaters that the company owned, and many of them show theater fronts with posters in the images, many from U.S. movies (see our images).
