An Original Vintage Trade Ad Sample (measures 9 1/2" x 12 1/2" [24 x 32 cm]) (Learn More) White Oak, the 1921 Lambert Hillyer silent gambling cowboy western (from the story 'Single Handed "By William S. Hart"; like most of Hart's movies, this one had a detailed complicated plot that covered many years; Hart is a gambler with a sister who was abused by an outlaw, and he is seeking revenge on him, but meanwhile, his girlfriend has killed her stepfather who tried to abuse her, and he takes the blame for the killing, but how will he then get revenge for his sister?) starring William S. Hart (in the title role as Oak Miller), Vola Vale, Alexander Gaden, Robert Walker, and Bert Sprotte. Note that the Robert Walker credited above was NOT the Robert Walker who starred in the 1940s and 1950s, but a different Robert Walker who started making movies in 1913, and he appeared in an amazing 255 movies through 1953, a 40 year span, but most of those were westerns, and a lot of them were very minor roles, often uncredited. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that Vincent Trotta was Paramount Pictures' chief art director in the 1920s and 1930s. While he was an accomplished artist himself, he spent much of his career supervising the art created by other artists for the posters and ads used to promote Paramount Pictures, including many of their most famous ones (Metropolis is one!). What is offered in this auction is a "tear sheet" of an ad that Mr. Trotta designed. He would be sent these tear sheets to make any final changes, or to approve them as printed. Tear sheets from pre-World War II movies are extremely rare. Our consignor obtained this trade ad sample (and four other trade ad samples and five tear sheets, which are similar) at one time when he purchased a collection. In addition to these ten items, there were two receipts, one from Warner's Features to Mr. Trotta and one from Famous Players-Lasky to Mr. Trotta, and our consignor asked us to picture these two items on the auction for the Metropolis tear sheet. We will be returning the letters to the consignor, but he wanted bidders to see them to make it clear that these ten items came directly from Mr. Trotta's estate. Condition: very good. There are some creases and smudges around the edges. Learn More about condition grades
