A Linenbacked Swiss Advertising Poster (measures 35 3/4" x 50 1/2" [91 x 128 cm]) (Learn More)

Fourrures Canton (literally translates to "Canton Furs"), the 1949 Swiss advertising poster promoting fur garments by Canton and featuring art of a woman wearing a huge fur coat by Charles Loupot. Note that this poster first appeared in 1924 with a black background. The background was changed to blue in the second (from the early 1930s) and third printing (1949). The third printing also changed the address at the bottom from "29 Rue Leopld-Robert in La Chaux-de-Fonds" to "20 Rue de Bourg in Lausanne".
Artist: d'apres Charles Loupot
Important Added Info: Note that this poster reuses the Charles Loupot art from the 1930s Swiss poster that first used this art, but because it was not the first time the art was used, the poster designer added "d'apres", meaning that this was not the first time this artwork was used.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

UPDATED 05/27/2013: Note that this is a Swiss poster and NOT French as we initially listed.

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster was never folded. It had a few creases and tears around the edges. Unfortunately, it had a series of areas of surface paper loss in the blue background at upper right. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above (a talented restorer could touch up the surface paper loss damage, either with or without re-backing the poster).
