U.S. Submarines... Silent Sentinels of Our Security, the 1943 U.S. World War II (WWII) Navy war poster featuring Giesen art of a sailor on the deck of a ship looking at a submarine. Note that this poster was created by the Electric Boat Company, which was founded in 1899 to build submersible ship designs. During the World War I (WWI) era, the company and its subsidiaries built 85 submarines and 722 submarine chasers for the US Navy. During World War II, the company and its subsidiaries built 74 submarines and 400 PT boats.
Artist: Giesen

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had never folded. It had pinholes, dot stains, and smudges around the edges. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above, but they are really not very distracting (and any restorer could easily touch them up without re-backing the poster).
