An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) The Playhouse (also known as "The Play House"), the 1921 Edward F. Cline & Buster Keaton silent fantasy slapstick comedy short (about a man who works as a stagehand in a playhouse; the long opening of the movie shows the performance of a play where every single actor is Buster Keaton, and so are the people who work at the theater; this is revealed to be a dream of the stagehand, but then the rest of the movie is almost as inventive, with all the actors at the real playhouse quitting, and Buster and the few remaining workers must take all the parts, and there is a pair of pretty twin sisters, and Buster wants romance with them, but he can't tell them apart) starring Buster Keaton, Edward F. Cline, Virginia Fox, Joe Murphy, and Joe Roberts. Note that this is a most unusual Buster Keaton comedy short, completely unlike his others. It has few actors and almost none of the physical comedy Keaton was famous for. That is because he was needing to let his broken ankle heal (broken in his last film), so he had to come up with a different sort of comedy. Part of that new comedy involved a special film process that allowed Keaton to be filmed over and over within the same scene, allowing many of him to be seen on camera at the same time. This was so completely Buster Keaton's work that he took onscreen credit for everything done in the movie, and he even left all the other actors uncredited! Many people consider this Buster Keaton's finest comedy short, and it was certainly far ahead of its time. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography.
