The first issue of the paper was published by James Gordon Bennett Sr., on May 6, 1835. By 1845, it was the most popular and profitable daily newspaper in the United States. Bennett stated that the function of a newspaper "is not to instruct but to startle and amuse." The poster had separation and tiny bits of paper loss on parts of the folds, with tears and areas of paper loss in the borders, almost completely in the blank borders, except for a 4" tear near the bottom center. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects.
