An Unfolded German Travel Poster (measures 23 3/4" x 33" [60 x 84 cm]) (Learn More) Hamburg Sudamerikanische Dampfschifffahrts-Gesellschaft (which translates to "Hamburg South American Steamship Company"; Hamburg Sud for short) is a German shipping (and former passenger) company that was founded in 1871 by a conglomerate of 11 Hamburg-based merchant houses. By 1914, the company was operating over 50 ships but lost them all during World War I (WWI). The company currently ranks among the ten largest container shipping brands worldwide. Artist: Ottomar Anton Important Added Info: Note that this poster (which we have never before auctioned!) is encouraging people to take a holiday trip during the summer and features Ottomar Anton artwork of a sailor and child (wearing a Bunad), with the Monte Rosa cruise ship and Norwegian fjord in the background. Monte Rosa was a passenger liner and cruise ship launched in Germany in 1930. During World War II (WWII) she was operated by the German navy as a troopship. At the end of the war, she was taken by the British Government as a prize of war and renamed the Empire Windrush. In British service, she continued to be used as a troopship until March 1954, when the vessel caught fire and sank in the Mediterranean Sea. Also, Ottomar Anton was a German painter, graphic artist and university professor from the 1920s to the 1970s. He designed many travel posters (he was the most prolific German shipping poster artist in the 1920s and 1930s). He joined the SS in 1936 and created World War II (WWII) Nazi propaganda art. He was incarcerated after the war, but later became a sought after graphic designer again. Condition: good to very good. The poster was never folded. It has a strip of tape on back of the upper edge (not put there for any restoration purpose) that slightly bleeds through to the front. It has a small tear at upper right and one at lower center. The one at lower center is backed with conservation tape and the one at upper right is backed with some masking tape. The poster is otherwise in pretty nice condition and it displays well as is, but after some restoration the very rare poster would look fantastic! Learn More about condition grades
