An Original Vintage Unfolded Stage Play Poster (measures 27 1/2" x 31 3/4" [70 x 81 cm]) (Learn More)

Jesse James, the circa 1910s cowboy western stage play production ("The sensational Western life drama"; "The Missouri Outlaw"). Note that we have seen multiple posters that are likely from the same production. Some mention "W.I. Swain's Western Spectacular Production" and some do not. Also, some posters include art of a black African American couple. All of the posters have been printed by the Donaldson Litho Co of Newport, KY. It is certainly possible that there were multiple different productions (perhaps one even had an all-black cast). We have seen other similar posters to these in museum collections, and they have guessed at dates of "1890s" to "1920s", but our guess is that these are 1910s. If anyone knows more about any of this, please e-mail us and we will post it here.
If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that this is an extremely rare poster! We have only auctioned three in all our years of auctioning (and the last time was in 2016.) All three of those came from a very interesting find of early stage posters. Our consignor thought we had auctioned that last of what he had in 2016, but he just discovered two more of the Jesse James posters (one each of two styles), and we are currently auctioning them in two separate auctions, and then there are no more posters left from this find!

Condition: fair to good. The poster is extremely fragile and it has tears and paper loss around the edges with a 6" tear near the middle of the right border which has paper tape on the back and small surface paper loss on the front. Obviously this poster urgently needs restoration, but since it is almost all "there", it will not be a difficult restoration, and once it is properly restored it would display wonderfully on the new owner's wall. Note that we have two small pieces from the borders that completely separated, and we will send those together with the poster to the winning bidder.
