An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 40" [69 x 102 cm]) (Learn More)

The Virtuous Thief, the 1919 Fred Niblo silent family relationship crime melodrama ("By C. Gardner Sullivan"; "Supervised by Thomas H. Ince"; about a girl whose brother steals from his employer, and she goes to work there to try to help her brother, but then the boss makes moves on her, and after the boss turns up dead, she is the lead suspect) starring Enid Bennett, Niles Welch, Lloyd Hughes, Willis Marks, and William Conklin. Note that this is a "lost" film, which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist.

Important Added Info: Note that ANY movie paper from this movie is incredibly rare. We have never auctioned even a single movie paper item from this movie until we received this one-sheet!

In the late 1910s through the early 1930s, MGM (and sometimes Paramount and a couple of other studios) would often make a regular one-sheet for a movie and, instead of a second style regular one-sheet, would instead make a special "rotogravure" one-sheet. Named after the rotogravure picture sections at the time popular in Sunday newspapers, these one-sheets would be printed in a single color, often sepia, but sometimes other colors, and they would usually incorporate pictorial images from the movie combined in a montage fashion. Very few rotogravure one-sheet have survived, since they were printed on the same paper stock used in newspapers of the time, and the paper is very fragile and often darkens. Note that most of these rotogravure one-sheets measured 28" x 42", with extra wide blank borders. Since this one measures 27" x 40", we know that the borders were trimmed and that the restorer only restored enough to bring the size up to 27" x 40", likely because the new owner had a frame that size.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had been trimmed in all the blank borders, but only blank white paper was affected. It also had creases, small tears, and tiny paper loss scattered on parts of most folds, and there were some tears outside of the folds, and someone had put tape on the back of those areas. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects. Also, the restorer did not recreate all of the missing blank borders, but it does not detract from the poster visually.
