John Herbert Dillinger was an American gangster in the Depression-era United States. He operated with a group of men known as the Dillinger Gang, which was accused of robbing 24 banks and four police stations, among other activities. He was also charged with (but never convicted of) the murder of an Indiana police officer who shot Dillinger in his bullet-proof vest during a shootout, prompting him to return fire. Dillinger courted publicity and the media of his time ran exaggerated accounts of his bravado and colorful personality, styling him as a Robin Hood figure. He was killed in Chicago on July 22nd of 1934 by Federal agents who were led by Melvin Purvis and Samuel P. Cowley. Dillinger's story has been depicted in books, TV and films. Some of the movies include: Dillinger (with Lawrence Tierney), Public Enemies (with Johnny Depp and Christian Bale), and High Sierra (loosely based on Dillinger and starring Humphrey Bogart)

Important Added Info: Note that this is a very rare original "wanted" poster from 1934 for legendary criminal John Dillinger. There are many reproductions of wanted posters like these, but this is absolutely an original poster! It was created on June 25, 1934 and printed in large quantities, and distributed around the country, but of course, very few survive. The front of the poster has the standard wanted banner, images of Dillinger, and the reward money, along with much other information, and J. Edgar Hoover's information at the bottom (he is called "John Edgar Hoover"!). The back of the poster has information about U.S. Department of Justice offices around the country with their telephone numbers, and the date "7/22/34" is written in pencil write on the back, and of course, this is the date Dillinger was killed, so likely someone filed this away once they heard the news! We have never offered an original Dillinger wanted poster before!

Condition: good to very good. The wanted poster has pinholes around the edges and a 1" tear and a 1/2" tear in the bottom border, with a 1/2" tear in the right border. It has some tape repairs on the back and has some darkening around the edges and on the center fold. It has some creases scattered throughout and an enlarged pinhole in the top center background area. The poster can be displayed and enjoyed as it is (and the defects certainly lend to it being authentic), or of course, restoration could be performed.
