eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result 4j302 TIM TYLER'S LUCK pressbook 1937 Frankie Thomas as the greatest adventure strip hero! Date Sold 3/5/2019Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Pressbook (pb; measures 14" x 22" [36 x 56 cm]; 8 pages) (Learn More) Tim Tyler's Luck, the 1937 Ford Beebe & Wyndham Gittens Africa juvenile jungle safari adventure serial ("The great adventure strip hero comes to the screen!"; "From the popular newspaper strip by Lyman Young"; "Owned and Copyrighted by King Features, Oct. 1, 1928"; "Original story and screen play by Wyndham Gittens, Norman S. Hall, Ray Trampe"; about a youthful adventurer who travels to Africa in search of his lost father, and he must fight the mysterious "Spider Webb") starring Frankie Thomas (in the title role "as Tim Tyler"), Frances Robinson ("as Lora Lacey"), Jack Mulhall ("as 'Sergeant Gates'"), Norman Willis ("as Spider Webb"), Al Shean ("as Professor Tyler"), William 'Billy' Benedict, Pat J. O'Brien (not THE Pat O'Brien who was part of the "Irish Mafia" with Cagney and McHugh, but another actor who appeared in 17 films between 1921 and 1941), and Jack Leonard (as the man in the gorilla suit). Note that Jack Leonard was one of the first men to play gorillas in movies. He was an extra in Tarzan the Ape Man, and the director did not like the way the men in ape suits were performing, and Jack Leonard said he could do better, and he was given the part! He and his wife made his gorilla suit and he studied real life gorillas to see how they moved and the sounds they made. He appeared in a dozen movies between 1932 and 1940, nine times of them as an ape! We don't know what happened to him after that (perhaps he passed away). If anyone knows more about Jack Leonard, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Also note that Ray 'Crash' Corrigan and Charles Gemora were two actors who played lots of gorillas in movies in the 1930s and 1940s. Emil Van Horn and Jack Leonard each played around a dozen gorillas, and interestingly, that was all they did (no doubt all four of them owned a gorilla suit!). Also note that Lyman Young, the creator of this comic strip, was the older brother of Chic Young, creator of "Blondie"! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that we have provided several images from this pressbook, always including the cover and the poster pages, and of course, the winner of this auction will receive the entire single pressbook we are auctioning (plus any supplements or heralds described above)! Also note that this pressbook is complete and uncut! Given that theater owners received pressbooks partly in order to create their newspaper advertising, and quite frequently cut them up for that purpose, it is rare to find a pressbook that IS complete and uncut! Note that we are auctioning 74 pressbooks in this Part II of our March Major Auction. 62 of those come from a single collector who was attempting to assemble EVERY pressbook from movie serials that were based on either comic book or comic strip characters, and he spent many decades doing so, and he came very close to getting every one there is! These include many that we have never auctioned in all our years of auctioning, and may well never auction them again! This is a very rare opportunity for collectors to acquire these ultra rare pressbooks (which are even more rare than the posters from these same serials, likely because they were sent to very few theaters, and likely most of those theaters immediately threw them out). If one started to try to assemble a similar collection without purchasing any of these pressbooks, they would likely spend many years before they could acquire even a small percentage of them. That is how rare these are! Condition: very good, NO CUTS. The pressbook is complete and uncut. It was folded once in each direction. We could re-fold it for shipping, but it seems a shame to do so, so we will only do so if the new owner requests that we do so. Learn More about condition grades
