What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had tiny paper loss at the crossfolds and some creases and tiny tears on parts of several foldlines. There were diagonal creases at the left and right ends of the middle foldline, extending 4" into the image on either side, and there were diagonal creases in the four corners, extending into the image background in each corner. There were smudges in the background area at middle right (above the title, and below Oakie's face). Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but the restorer did only the most minor of touch up to the above defects, and they are still somewhat noticeable (mostly in the solid background areas). Any talented restorer could touch up those areas without re-backing the poster (although I could well imagine many collectors not being bothered by these signs of aging on a nearly 80-year-old poster)!
