eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result #0622 TO CATCH A THIEF linen Swedish '55 Date Sold 3/11/2003Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Swedish Movie Poster (measures 27 1/2" x 39 1/4") (Learn More) Alfred Hitchcock's To Catch a Thief, the 1955 Alfred Hitchcock romantic crime mystery thriller ("It's a web of romance and suspense that spins you from delight to danger - then spirals to an explosive climax on the fabulous Riviera!"; "Based on the novel by David Dodge"; "Screenplay by John Michael Hayes"; about a retired jewel thief living on the Riviera, and there is a string of daring jewel robberies, so naturally, he is the lead suspect, and he decides to find the true thief himself, and he is aided by a beautiful rich young woman and her mother!) starring Cary Grant, Grace Kelly, Jessie Royce Landis, John Williams, Charles Vanel, Brigitte Auber, Rene Blancard, Georgette Anys, and Jean Martinelli. Note that Cary Grant had announced his retirement from movies in 1953, but he was lured out of retirement by Hitchcock to make this one. Also note that Jessie Royce Landis, who had played Grant's mother in "North by Northwest", this time played his potential mother-in-law, and yet, she was only eight years older than Grant, who had aged very well! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this Swedish poster measures 27 1/2" x 39 1/4" and is linenbacked. This poster has been professionally linenbacked. It now looks great, and most dealers would describe it as "fine (or mint) on linen". We have noted the defects that were restored below (and feel everyone should always do this!). Many collectors would not be aware of the restoration this poster has had unless it was specifically shown to them! Condition: good. This poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. It appears to have had the following defects: the poster had stains and smudges around the edges of the poster and across the left half of the top foldline. There were also stains in Grant's face. The poster has had paint restoration around the edges of the poster and in the background area between Grant and Kelly's faces. The restorer painted over much of Grant's face, presumably to "blend" the restoration, and it is truly not very noticeable from a distance away. While it is obvious that most collectors would prefer a better condition copy of this poster, it truly does look quite nice from any distance away, and I would think many collectors would be happy to display it on their wall!
