An Original Vintage German Political Campaign Poster (measures 17 1/2" x 27 1/4" [44 x 69 cm]) (Learn More) Das Arbeitende Deutschland Wahlt Rot, Wahlt den Arbeiter Thalmann (literally translates to "Working Germany Votes Red, Elects the Worker Thalmann"), the 1920s German poster announcing the election of the Communist politician Ernst Thalmann. Ernst Thalmann was the leader of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) during much of the Weimar Republic. He was arrested by the Gestapo in 1933 and held in solitary confinement for eleven years, before being shot in Buchenwald on Adolf Hitler's orders in 1944. We believe this poster refers to when Thalmann was elected as the Chairman of the KPD in 1925. He ran for the German Presidency in both 1925 and in 1932, and he lost both times, but he helped split the vote and inadvertently helped the Nazis to gain power. Important Added Info: Note that this poster has been mounted onto a "Chartex"-like material (we are not 100% certain it is Chartex, but if not, it is something very similar. Chartex is a backing paper that is a linen-like paper, similar to the material you line drawers with. It serves its function well in that the poster is preserved, which is why many restorers other than movie poster restorers use it, but it is very difficult to impossible to remove from the back of the poster. SO DO NOT BID ON THIS POSTER UNLESS YOU CAN ACCEPT THAT IT LIKELY CAN'T BE REMOVED FROM ITS BACKING, AND WILL NEED TO BE KEPT AS IT IS (although it is not harming the poster, and it enables it to be displayed). Condition: good. As noted above, the poster is backed on a Chartex-like material, and likely can't be removed from it (at least not without heroic efforts). Whoever mounted it performed very slight restoration to There is but mostly left alone its defects which included some creases and tears along the folds, some small areas of paper loss, much scuffing in the red areas and a tear and tape stains in the left of the top border (see our image).
