Grindell-Matthews' Death Ray, the 1924 Gaston Quiribet English silent science fiction (sci-fi) inventory documentary short featuring Harry Grindell Matthews. Matthews was an English inventor who claimed to have invented a death ray in the 1920s. He said he could stop engines, shoot down airplanes, explode gunpowder, and incapacitate infantry from the distance of four miles. He performed a few minor demonstrations for journalists (who believed him) and the English military (who did not). Eventually, the only "demonstration" he was willing to make was in this film, and the device in the movie bore no resemblance to the one government officials had seen. He later claimed to have sold the death ray to someone in the United States, but refused to say who or for how much. Obviously, there are many "holes" in Mr. Matthews' story, but this is a fascinating documentary about which virtually no advertising of any kind survives! Important Added Info: Note that ANY movie paper from this documentary is incredibly rare. We have never auctioned even a single movie paper item from this movie until we received this lobby card! Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. Condition: good to very good. There are some tiny black ink stains across the center of the image that appear to be a printing defect. Otherwise, the card is in nice condition. Note that this lobby card is completely unrestored and there is not a single piece of tape on either the front or back! Learn More about condition grades
