Note that this was part of the nationwide enactment of the Social Security Act that was signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1935. When it was first signed into law in 1935, it was thought that people's life expectancy would be a few years past 65 (on average), so that people could have dignity in their final years. It was projected to not be that expensive of a government program, and everyone was qualified for it, even if they were soon to turn 65. Few in the government at that time could possibly have predicted the many, many changes that occurred in the country in the 81 years since, and the Social Security system is a major part of the federal government. But this poster is from the historic first time that people would get monthly Social Security checks, and "for the rest of their life"! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography.
