He was an original member of The Three Stooges (together with this brother Moe Howard and Larry Fine) in vaudeville and in their first film, Soup to Nuts, but left the act and was replaced by his brother Curly; a decade later, after Shemp had appeared in many films solo, Curly became ill, and Shemp re-joined the Three Stooges and appeared in many of their films.
