Date Sold 4/9/2024Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. A Linenbacked Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Window Card (WC; measures 14" x 18" [36 x 46 cm]) (Learn More) Charlie Chan's Courage, the 1934 Eugene Forde & George Hadden detective mystery crime thriller ("Words of wisdom his only weapons!"; "Based on novel 'The Chinese Parrot,' by Earl Derr Biggers", which had been the source novel of the 1927 Paul Leni silent Chan movie of that name, and this was a sound remake with a different actor in the lead role) starring Warner Oland (in the title role as Charlie Chan), Drue Leyton, Donald Woods, Murray Kinnell, and Paul Harvey. Note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! Note that this is a "lost" film which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that posters from this movie is incredibly rare. We have only previously auctioned a Leader Press one-sheet (21 years ago) and a studio-issued one-sheet (for $2,200) from this movie, and NO other posters of any kind (mostly only stills and lobby cards) until we received this window card! Also note that this poster has been trimmed and it now measures 14" x 18" [36 x 46 cm]. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The card was trimmed to 12" x 16". Very fortunately, it was all of the blank top that was trimmed off, and it did not affect the top of the title area. The left 2" was trimmed off, which affected the "CH" of "CHARLIE" and the left side of Oland's hair, ear, and cheek, but not any of his features. Someone replaced the missing left 2" and added a blank 2" to the top of the card, and drew in the missing left 2", but otherwise left the card alone (and it had also darkened). Please do not bid on this very rare window card unless you can accept the restoration it has had (and have looked at our super-sized image). Learn More about condition grades
