Meyrink was the Austrian author who wrote The Golem in 1915, which told the story of a Jewish rabbi who created a zombie-like monster who was intended to free the Jewish people from persecution, and it was turned into one of the best known early horror movies in 1920. This novel, Walpurgis Night (which is the eve of the Christian feast day of Saint Walpurga, who was an abbess who battled witchcraft, plus pests, rabies and whooping cough in the 8th century), was set in present day 1917 Czechoslovakia, and dealt with a country on the verge of revolution, with mobs of poor people storming a castle on this holiday eve. Artist: Lajos Szanto Important Added Info: Note that this is a 1918 Hungarian book advertising poster (with a tagline that translates to "The most recent novel of the world-famous writer of The Golem") promoting this book by Gustav Meyrink.
