An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) The Toy Wife, the 1938 Richard Thorpe Louisiana historical romantic love triangle melodrama ("She said, 'Make the most of life and love'"; about a disturbed but beautiful 16 year-old girl who inflicts misery, first by stealing her sister's fiance and then being unfaithful to him after he marries her, and being a terrible mother to their child) starring Luise Rainer, Melvyn Douglas, Robert Young, Barbara O'Neil, and H.B. Warner. Note that Luise Rainer, who had won back to back Best Actress Oscars in 1936 and 1937, was solely offered parts like this after those wins, and she became disenchanted with Hollywood, and retired from the movies the year this movie was made. She made a few non-Hollywood movies over the rest of her life. Getting away from Hollywood obviously agreed with her, because she passed away in 2014 at the age of 104! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we once auctioned the other style half-sheet from this movie, but we have never before auctioned this different style half-sheet! Note that we have some linenbacked half-sheets in Part I of this March Major Auction, and Part II was supposed to solely contain paperbacked half-sheets. However, this poster was accidentally omitted from Part I, so we are including it in Part II. It certainly can be sent in a large flat package together with any of the paperbacked half-sheets, but it also could be rolled in a tube with any of the linenbacked half-sheets from Part I (or it could be rolled in a tube by itself). What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had small paper loss and creases at the crossfold, with creases, separation, and scuffs along both folds. It had creases, smudges, and stains around the edges, with a few scattered in the image. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects. Note that either the restorer who mounted the poster did not leave any excess linen around the edges of the poster, or possibly the owner of the poster chose to carefully trim off the excess, so that the poster would fit in a frame.
