(Learn More) The Mighty Barnum, the 1934 Walter Lang circus carnival biography ("Here's the big show! The heart story of a master showman... his trials and aches... his triumphs and glories."; based on the play by Gene Fowler & Bess Meredyth; produced by Darryl F. Zanuck; a highly fictionalized re-telling of the story of the great circus showman, P.T. Barnum, who is reported to have said "There's a sucker born every minute", but he may have appropriated it from a competitor!; near the end of his life, he merged his circus with the Bailey Circus, to for the legendary Barnum & Bailey Circus, which carried on for 146 years until closing in 2017) starring Wallace Beery (in the title role as P.T. Barnum), Adolphe Menjou (as Bailey Walsh), Virginia Bruce, Rochelle Hudson, Janet Beecher, George Brasno (as General Tom Thumb), Olive Brasno (as Lavinia Thumb), R.E. 'Tex' Madsen (as the Cardiff Giant), and May Boley (as the Bearded Lady) NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: The name "Virginia Bruce Gilbert" is written on the cover of the script, so this script was Virginia Bruce's personal copy (she was married to famed actor John Gilbert at the time, and used his last name personally!). There are some handwritten corrections and changes on 8 interior pages, surely put there by Miss Bruce herself. There is a portion of page 108 and page 109 that was neatly cut out, surely because that portion of that scene was deleted. The top right corner of page 100 was ripped out, likely because Miss Bruce's part begins on page 102, and we would think she took the torn piece and "bookmarked" the script there, although the torn piece is now missing. Note that this script is the revised final draft from September 12, 1934 and the screenplay was written by Gene Fowler & Bess Meredyth. The first interior page had a form that was signed by the person receiving the script and it had perforations in the bottom one-third of that page, and that form has been removed from that page (which is as intended, and is typical with such scripts). This was the way the studio kept track of who had these scripts! Condition: good. The covers of the script were tattered with paper loss around the edges. The interior pages were in pretty nice condition with the defect described above of the corner of interior page 100 being ripped off, which affects the dialog at the top of that page. The person who owned this script removed the covers and left them loose, and then had the rest of the script put into a modern binding with two brads. One could leave it as it is, or one certainly could have the covers restored and replaced onto the script, but that will be the choice of the winning bidder of this rare script!
