It's Superman, the 1966 Harold Prince Broadway stage play production (of the play by David Newman, Robert Benton, Charles Strouse & Lee Adams; based on the classic DC Comics character created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster; "The new musical comedy") starring Jack Cassidy, Michael O'Sullivan, Patricia Marand ("as Lois Lane"), Don Chastain, Linda Lavin (much later "Alice" on TV), The Flying Lings, and Bob Holiday (in the title tole "as Superman"/Clark Kent). Note that after the great success of the Batman TV show, which started in 1966, it was only natural to try to do something similar with Superman. Legendary Broadway producer Harold Prince came up with the idea of a musical play based on the character, and David Newman and Robert Benton were hired to write the book, and Charles Strauss and Lee Adams wrote the music and lyrics. The play opened to generally good reviews, but it did not "catch on" with the Broadway going public of that day, and it only ran 129 performances. In 1975, a TV special was created from a truncated version of this play, but it did not get great reviews, and it was shown on ABC on its late night "Wide World of Entertainment". However, the idea of creating a new successful Superman could not be stopped, and in 1978, a major budget blockbuster movie called "Superman" was released, and David Newman and Robert Benton wrote the script for it, and it was a massive worldwide success!
