An Unfolded French Advertising Poster (measures 42 3/4" x 54 1/2" [109 x 138 cm]) (Learn More)

Le Vin Desiles (literally translates to "Desiles Wine"), the 1910s French alcohol liquor advertising poster (with a tagline that translates to "Formula of Doctor A. C., ex-Marine doctor") promoting the purchase of a revitalizing cordial which was sold in pharmacies, and featuring Franciso Tamagno artwork of a cantiniere holding a glass of of the product. Note that vivandiere or cantiniere is a French name for women attached to military regiments as canteen/tavern keepers. Their actual historic function of selling wine to the troops and working in canteens led to the adoption of the name "cantiniere". They served in the French army up until the beginning of World War I (WWI), but the custom (and the name) spread to many other armies.
Artist: Francesco Tamagno
Important Added Info: Note that this is an extremely rare poster. We have never auctioned one in all our years of auctioning!

Condition: poor to fair. The poster was placed on to a very thin linen backing sometime after it was printed. Prior to being backed with the ancient, thin backing, the poster completely separated along the vertical foldline. It has MANY creases and tears in the paper throughout and it has much staining at top and in other areas (see our image). The poster is in urgent need of restoration. Certainly a top restorer can repair the defects described above and re-back the poster on to regular restoration linen, and after, the poster could display well, but please bear in mind the poster's many defects and the cost of restoration before placing a bid.
