An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Title Lobby Card (LC TC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More)

Scarlet Days, the 1919 D.W. Griffith silent romantic adventure cowboy western ("A Tale of the Olden West"; "Photographed by G.W. Bitzer"; about a girl who was given away by her mother as a child, and she gets a chance to meet her mother when she is grown up, but she doesn't know that her mother is a saloon hall girl who is about to be hung; she reunites with her mother, and a kindhearted Mexican bandit, played by Richard Barthelmess, rescues the pair, and that is only the beginning of an epic story!) starring Richard Barthelmess, J. Wesley Warner, Eugenie Besserer, Carol Dempster, and Clarine Seymour. Note that the cinematographer on this movie was Billy Bitzer, who worked very closely with D.W. Griffith (they made 490 movies together!). Apparently, Griffith felt that Bitzer really deserved credit for his great contributions to Griffith's movies, and he is prominently billed on the title card (and maybe other posters that we have not seen), and he is billed as "G.W. Bitzer". It is very unusual for a cinematographer to have been billed on advertising for silent movies.

Important Added Info: Note that we have only auctioned one other example of this title card, and that one was in "fair to good" condition.

Note that we have seen lobby cards from this D.W. Griffith movie that are dated 1919 and others that are dated 1920. The movie opened in November of 1919, and we imagine that the movie was so successful that they ran out of movie paper, and at some point in 1920, during its first continuous release, they printed additional cards and changed the date on them, so we identify which cards are dated 1919 and which are dated 1920, but we don't call the 1920 ones re-releases, because they are from the first continuous release. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here.

Condition: very good. There are some faint smudges and a few tack holes around the edges, with a thin area of darkening in the extreme outer edge of the right blank border. Otherwise, the card is in pretty nice condition. Note that this lobby card is completely unrestored and there is not a single piece of tape on either the front or back!
