An Original Vintage Autographed Hardcover Book (measures 6 1/2" x 9 1/4"; 332 pages) (Learn More)

Mary Tyler Moore was an actress from the 1950s until her passing in 2017. She got her start in 1957 as the answering service girl in TV's "Richard Diamond, Private Detective", even though only her sexy legs were shown! While best remembered from TV's "The Dick Van Dyke Show" (as Laura Petrie) and "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" (as Mary Richards), she also starred in several movies including: Ordinary People (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), Flirting with Disaster, and Thoroughly Modern Millie AND Dick Van Dyke was born in tiny West Plains, Missouri in 1925 (his parents were just passing through). West Plains is also where Bruce Hershenson has lived the past 23 years! He started as a stand-up comic, and he briefly had a popular act where he would do silly lip-syching to popular songs (with wacky props). When he found success, he passed that act on to his younger less successful brother Jerry, who stuck with those routines for decades. He won a Tony Award for his stage role in Bye, Bye Birdie in 1960, and was chosen the next year to star in The Dick Van Dyke show, surely one of the best TV series of all time. While the show was on the air, he found time to recreate his part from Bye, Bye Birdie in the movie version of that part, and to co-star in What a Way to Go, The Art of Love, and in Mary Poppins, where he fully held his own opposite Julie Andrews. It seemed there was nothing this superbly talented actor could not do, but he was a major alcoholic, and that illness and his subsequent quitting drinking would greatly drag on his output for many years. He 'retired' many times, but always returned to either movies or TV. In 1993 this ultra-likeable actor returned to TV as Dr. Mark Sloan in Diagnosis Murder, which was basically Matlock but in the world of medicine. He is still making a few movie and TV appearances! AND Carl Reiner was born in The Bronx in New York City in 1922. When he was 16 he discovered acting, but college and service in the Army during WWII came first. During the war, he married singer Estelle Lebost. He was 21 and she was 29, unusual for that time, but they remained married for 64 years until she passed away in 2008, when she was 94 (you almost surely know her from one classic line in son Rob's When Harry Met Sally, when she said "I'll have what she's having"!). After the war, Carl got some Broadway parts, and in 1950 he got his big break performing sketch comedy on Sid Caesar's Your Show of Shows, because he also became one of the writers, alongside Mel Brooks, Neil Simon, Larry Gelbart, Aaron Ruben and other all-time greats! In 1959, Reiner wrote and starred in a TV pilot called Head of the Family, which was autobiographical, about the home life of a TV writer. The network didn't like it, but two years later he tried again, this time casting super-likeable Dick Van Dyke in the lead role, and it was a giant hit. Reiner did get to act on the show, as Alan Brady (reportedly based on Caesar, Reiner's old boss). After the show went off the air, Reiner did some acting, writing, and directing, with mixed results. He wrote an autobiographical novel "Enter Laughing", which became a Broadway hit starring a then unknown Alan Arkin, and then was adapted into a movie with Reni Santoni in the lead role, and the final 12 minutes of that movie are among the funniest 12 minutes ever in a movie! He followed with the ultimate black comedy "Where's Poppa?" in 1979, he did the first of a series of movies with equally quirky wacky stand-up comedian Steve Martin, The Jerk, followed by Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, The Man with Two Brains and All of Me. After taking a "break", he resurfaced as an actor, most notably in the Ocean's 11 series. He has three children in the creative arts, but it is his son Rob, who is most famous, following in his father's footsteps as an actor and director, and to my mind he has equalled or surpassed his father's directing accomplishments, which I am sure made Carl very proud! Carl Reiner holds the unusual distinction of being the only person to appear on every version of The Tonight Show, and he made countless appearances. It is easy to see why, because he was an experienced performer who had an incredibly quick and sharp mind, which made him the ideal talk show guest! Reiner passed away in 2020 at the age of 98.
Important Added Info: Note that this item has been personally autographed (signed) by THREE people: Mary Tyler Moore, Dick Van Dyke AND Carl Reiner, and it is the first edition from 1995!

Note that this item was consigned to us by an individual who owned a company that made movies and videos with famous celebrities in the 1980s and 1990s. The owner of the company would have the celebrities sign items from their famous films, and sometimes he would find second or third celebrities to autograph an item he already had gotten signed! In addition, he would ask celebrities he came in contact with if they had signed items from other stars that they would sell to him, and he purchased a number of items that way. He also would purchase unsigned items from the famed Larry Edmunds Bookshop in Los Angeles (to have the celebrities sign), and while he was doing that he would also purchase some of their signed items. So all of these autographed items we are auctioning were either obtained in person, obtained from celebrities who obtained them in person, or obtained from the Larry Edmunds Bookshop, and we feel certain that the autograph(s) on this item is authentic!

Condition: very good. Other than some faint scuffing on the dust jacket, the book itself is in nice condition!
