An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Window Card Movie Poster (WC; measures 14" x 22" [36 x 56 cm]) (Learn More) Only Angels Have Wings, the classic 1939 Howard Hawks romantic love triangle pilot airplane aviation adventure thriller ("Together for the first time"; "Each day a rendezvous with peril... each night a meeting with romance!"; a wild story of a showgirl arriving in a mythical tiny South American country where a cynical American expatriate runs an airplane mail delivery service which involves treacherous plane flights over the Andes; there are other pilots who risk their lives and other romantic involvements, and the plot is really complicated, but the movie moves quickly, and it has a great cast, and is considered one of Howard Hawks' very best movies) starring Cary Grant, Jean Arthur, Thomas Mitchell, Rita Hayworth, Richard Barthelmess, Don 'Red' Barry, Noah Beery Jr., Miisa Sierra, Allyn Joslyn, and Sig Ruman. Note that you almost never see major Hollywood movies with two extremely attractive female leads who are fan favorites, but this one had both Jean Arthur, who had been acting for many years, but was at the height of her popularity, and Rita Hayworth, who would soon become one of America's most favorite sexy actresses! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have only auctioned this window card once before, and it sold for $526! Other than that, the only other poster we have auctioned from this was a one-sheet 28 years ago (first release U.S. movie posters are incredibly rare!). Note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a heavy paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (except heavier). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards, and lobby cards. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: poor to fair. Prior to paperbacking, the window card had stains and scuffs scattered throughout, and some lesser defects around the edges. Someone mounted the poster onto a paper backing and then performed restoration, which almost surely included bleaching the card to lessen the staining, which it did, but it did not remove all the stains. Because they did not want to paint over the entire card, they painted over several of the solid background areas and left alone other areas where you can still see signs of the light staining. It also was extremely roughly handled after it was backed, and clearly it received many additional defects after it was backed. The worst of these was being partially folded across the middle, which caused the image to unevenly crack in several areas across the center and to cause the right side of the card below the middle to start to separate from the backing. There are also tears that were caused in the lower right, including paper loss in the bottom right corner. There is a rough vertical crease 1" from the left edge that was perhaps entirely caused after the card was backed, or only partially caused. Obviously, this card has really massive condition issues, most of which occurred after it was backed. It would surely require the talents of a top restorer to make it presentable, and it still would have a considerable amount of restoration, so bear all this in mind (and look at our super-sized image) before bidding on this rare window card.
