An Original Vintage Theatrical Gel Backed Insert Movie Poster (measures 14" x 36" [36 x 91 cm]) (Learn More) Souls at Sea, the 1937 Henry Hathaway anti-slave-trading seafaring sailor romantic love triangle adventure thriller ("Courage and disaster... Faith and treachery! The greatest adventure romance of all times"; "Adolph Zukor presents"; "Based on a story by Ted Lesser"; "Screen play by Grover Jones and Dale Van Every") starring Gary Cooper, George Raft, Frances Dee, Henry Wilcoxon, Harry Carey Sr., Robert Barrat, Olympe Bradna, Porter Hall, Virginia Weidler, Joseph Schildkraut, and Robert Cummings (Bob Cummings) NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this was printed by the "other company". This was a company in the Midwest that from roughly 1936 to roughly 1941 printed its own one-sheets and lobby card sets (and a very few inserts and half-sheets) for three major studio movies (Warner Brothers, Paramount and United Artists, but no other studios). The posters and lobby cards are from the original release of the movie, and almost always have completely different artwork from the regular studio release. They never have the name of the releasing studio on the poster or any of the lobby cards. Sometimes, "other company" posters or lobby cards have images that are the equal of those from the regular studio release posters or lobby cards! Also note that this poster has never been machine folded! Most insert posters were folded twice horizontally right off of the printing press. It is very difficult to find an unfolded example of most insert posters, especially from before 1970! Condition: good to very good. The poster was "gel backed", which means that it was moistened with a special gel solution, attached to a backing, allowed to dry, and then the poster had touch up while it was backed, and afterward, the backing was removed. This particular poster had many partial horizontal creases scattered throughout (more so in the top and bottom 4"). It appears that the poster was likely rolled at one time and handled roughly, and that this is what caused the many creases. There were the usual three folds with an oval-shaped area of paper loss at the left end of the top foldline. The poster was starch backed by a talented professional and expert restoration was performed to the above defects. The poster looks fantastic, but you can clearly see signs of the restoration of the above defects (because to make them invisible would have required repainting most of the poster). From any reasonable viewing distance, the poster displays great, and because the poster was not backed, it still looks and feels like an un-backed insert! Learn More about condition grades
