An Original Vintage Theatrical Autographed 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Hattie McDaniel was an actress from the 1930s to the 1950s. She was one of the first black African American performers to achieve success in mainstream Hollywood movies. She is best remembered for her role as "Mammy" in "Gone with the Wind", and she appeared in 95 movies between 1932 and 1949, and she had her own TV show, "Beulah", in the 1950s. She was even the inspiration for the "Mammy Two Shoes" character in the Tom & Jerry cartoons! But because she almost exclusively played stereotyped roles throughout her career, her work is little seen today (except of course for "Gone with the Wind"). That is especially unfortunate, because she had an even more significant career than most people realize. She is believed to be the first black woman to sing on the radio (in 1915), and she was a major vaudeville and cabaret singing star in the 1910s and 1920s! Perhaps a movie can be made about her remarkable career. McDaniel passed away in 1952 at the age of 59. Important Added Info: Note that this still has been personally autographed (signed) by Hattie McDaniel! Our consignor is a longtime dealer who acquired this signed item among many other purchases in his inventory, and he does not have a certificate of authenticity, but we believe the signature to likely be authentic. As is true of all the signed items we are currently auctioning, we give every buyer 30 days in which to review what they purchased and they can return any item as long as it is within 30 days of the end of the auction. On non-signed items, we give a "lifetime guarantee" on everything we auction, but on signed items, we give the above modified guarantee of 30 days after the auction closes. Condition: fair to good. The still was glued to an album page at one time, and there are remnants of that page attached to the back, which has also caused the still to become slightly rippled. There are many stains and smudges throughout, with paper loss and a tear in the upper left. Please look at our super-sized images to get a good sense of the condition of this still before placing a bid. Learn More about condition grades
