An Original Vintage Linenbacked Dutch Circus Poster (measures 30 1/2" x 42 3/4" [77 x 109 cm]) (Learn More) Sabu the Elephant Boy, the 1953 Dutch circus poster (with taglines that translate to "Sabu the Elephant Boy personally in Circus Mikkenie"; "With his favorite elephants") featuring artwork of Sabu on an elephant. Circus Mikkenie was founded in 1948 by Frans Mikkenie and was the largest circus in the Netherlands until 1954. Of course, Sabu Dastagir was an Indian actor from the 1930s to the 1960s. He was found during location shooting for The Elephant Boy (at the time, he was the ward of the royal elephant stables), and immediately recruited by United Artists to become their star! Some of his movies include: Jungle Book, Black Narcissus, and The Thief of Bagdad (where he played Abu, the thief, son of Abu the Thief, and grandson of Abu the Thief). When his film career wound down at the end of the 1940s, he tried his hand at other things, including appearing in a circus act as "Sabu the Elephant Boy". He signed a contract to star in a movie in India, but he was denied a work permit, so he never got to make a movie in his native country. In the early 1960s, he was still extremely healthy, and yet he died of a heart attack in 1963 at the age of 39, which is a complete mystery. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
