An Original Vintage Linenbacked World War I Poster (measures 25" x 37 1/4" [64 x 95 cm]) (Learn More)

Join the Air Service, the 1917 U.S. World War I (WWI) Home Front military recruitment poster ("and Serve in France"; "Do it now") encouraging men to join the United States Army Air Service, and featuring J. Paul Verrees artwork of two soldiers on the ground with a bi-plane flying overhead.
Artist: J. Paul Verrees
Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this war poster! It originally was printed with the words "and Serve in France" below the title at top. However, this poster has a large snipe which reads "SPRUCE PRODUCTION DIVISION SIGNAL CORPS U.S. ARMY", and of course, there may have been other snipes used on other examples of the poster. The Spruce Production Division was a unit of the United States Army established in 1917 to produce high-quality Sitka spruce timber needed to make aircraft. The division was part of the Army Signal Corps's Aviation Section, with headquarters in Portland, Oregon. The Spruce Production Division was authorized to induct 10,317 troops (which was later updated to over 28,000), so obviously posters like this were used to help them find those troops (many were already employed in lumber production), making the poster pretty deceptive! The division produced nearly 150 million board feet of spruce in just 15 months.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had a snipe at top center (see above). It also had some small paper loss on the folds and many tiny areas of paper loss scattered throughout the image. It had some tears and small paper loss around the edges. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects.
