Date Sold 12/12/2019Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Undated (probably 1910s) Re-Release Theatrical Folded One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 42" [69 x 107 cm]) (Learn More) Cruel, Cruel Love, the 1914 George Nichols silent romantic comedy short (produced by Mack Sennett; about a man who falsely thinks he has been jilted by his sweetheart, and he attempts suicide, but fortunately, he discovers the truth in time!) starring Charlie Chaplin (Charles Chaplin), Edgar Kennedy, Minta Durfee, Eva Nelson, and Glen Cavender NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned an example of this poster once before, and it sold for $1,300! It is from a 1910s re-release of this 1914 movie. The same poster exists with titles of other 1914 Charlie Chaplin movies in the lower title area. Charlie Chaplin was so popular in the 1910s that virtually every theater made an effort to include at least one of his shorts on their program, because it made such a difference in the attendance! We have seen other auctions misidentify these posters are being from 1914, but they are absolutely not. Still, these re-release posters are incredibly rare themselves (and the first release 1914 posters are virtually nonexistent), so this is one of the only ways to obtain a 1910s Charlie Chaplin poster! Also note that this one-sheet has been trimmed and it now measures 27" x 42". Condition: good to very good. The poster originally measured 28" x 42", and most of the blank left and right borders were trimmed off, so the poster now measures 27" x 42", no doubt to fit a frame. It also has separation on parts of many folds and someone put paper tape on the back of the separated areas, and also on the back of the bottom border, where there were some tears, and on the back of part of the upper right border for the same reason. It has tiny paper loss and small tears at some crossfolds, and some smudges and darkening on parts of the folds, with staining and ink transfer in the white background areas. After a relatively simple linenbacking, this rare and desirable poster will display wonderfully! Learn More about condition grades
