Italienischer Festball (literally translates to "Italian Festival Ball "), the 1939 German poster promoting a festival/carnival featuring Vicente Escudero & Pietro Mascagni which was held at the Deutschen Theater in Munich, Germany. Vicente Escudero was a Spanish flamenco dancer who was closely associated with the avant-garde of his time and brought modernist aesthetics to bear on his theory of dance. Escudero was one of the few theorists of his time to comment on the choreography and presentation of the male flamenco dance and his Decalogue or ten rules for the male dancer are still respected today. As well as being the leading flamenco dancer of his era, he was a talented painter in the style, and his studies of flamenco are frequently exhibited. His work was admired by the Spanish modernist painter Joan Miro. Escudero also appeared in the films Castille On Fire (1960) and With the East Wind (1966). Pietro Mascagni was an Italian composer primarily known for his operas. His 1890 masterpiece Cavalleria Rusticana caused one of the greatest sensations in opera history and single-handedly ushered in the Verismo movement in Italian dramatic music. Note that this poster features Ludwig Hohlwein art of party-goers in gowns and tuxedos with Italian landmarks behind them. Munich (the Bavarian capital) used to be a carnival stronghold from the turn of the 19th to the 20th century until well into the 1930s, and it is in fact alive and kicking today. In 1914 alone, there were 533 masked balls and 145 black and white balls. This phenomenon of decadent hustle and bustle was created in particular by the artists of the Schwabinger Boheme, at first in the form of wild studio festivals, but increasingly also by artists' balls. Ludwig Hohlwein was a German artist from the 1890s until his passing in 1949. He is one of the best known German poster artists (though his reputation suffered because of his work with the Nazis)! Initially an architect student who illustrated for newspapers, he went on to design book decorations, booklets, and advertising posters. He joined the Nazi Regime in 1933 after refusing an offer to emigrate to the United States. Poster historian Alain Weill says "Hohlwein was the most prolific and brilliant German posterist of the 20th century. Beginning with his first efforts, Hohlwein found his style with disconcerting facility. It would vary little for the next forty years. The drawing was perfect from the start, nothing seemed alien to him, and in any case, nothing posed a problem for him. His figures are full of touches of color and a play of light and shade that brings them out of their background and gives them substance".

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster was never folded. It had a tape stain that darkened the right blank border, but otherwise, the poster was in really nice condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above.
