An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Pressbook (pb; measures 9 1/4" x 12 1/4" [23 x 31 cm]; 19 pages) (Learn More)

The Revenge of Tarzan, the 1920 Harry Revier & George M. Merrick silent Africa kidnapping romantic action adventure jungle thriller (based on the novel The Return of Tarzan "by Edgar Rice Burroughs"; Tarzan tangles with the evil Russian Nikolas Rokoff, who kidnaps Jane and takes her to Africa, but Tarzan rescues her) starring Gene Pollar (in the title role as Tarzan), Walter Miller, Karla Schramm, Armand Cortes, George Romain, and Estelle Taylor. Note that Tarzan of the Apes was the 1914 novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, and was the basis of two movies, "Tarzan of the Apes" in 1918, and "The Romance of Tarzan" in 1919 (both starring Elmo Lincoln as Tarzan). "The Revenge of Tarzan" was based on the 1915 novel "The Return of Tarzan", and Gene Pollar took over the role of Tarzan. There is a fascinating bit of trivia about this movie. It was originally titled "The Return of Tarzan" (just as the source novel was), and some posters were printed with that title. But at the last minute, it was changed to the more dynamic title "The Revenge of Tarzan", and posters were printed with that title instead. This is the exact opposite of the situation that existed with George Lucas' "Return of the Jedi" many decades later, which was originally title "Revenge of the Jedi", but had its title changed at the last minute to make it sound less violent. Note that this is a "lost" film, which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist.

Important Added Info: Note that this is one of the absolute coolest pressbooks ever! Not only does it have beautiful full-color covers, but it also has the poster pages on the inside front and back covers in full-color as well. It is printed on a deluxe paper and has all kinds of cool illustrated articles, and they even show all the lobby cards and the glass slide. But the best of all is that this movie (as noted above) was originally titled "The Return of Tarzan", and (also as noted above) it was changed to "The Revenge of Tarzan" at the last second, after posters were printed, so there are posters that were printed with "The Return of Tarzan" that have a "Revenge" snipe over the word "Return". This pressbook was printed before the title change, so the cover and the entire pressbook refers to the pressbook as "The Return of Tarzan". But because they caught the title change before the pressbook was sent out, the studio had paper covers attached over the full-color covers that explained the title change, and they also bound a sheet within the pressbook that explained the name change ("It is stronger. It is more dramatic. It packs a punch."), and there are two of those sheets in the front and back of the pressbook! We don't know if there are any other versions of the pressbook with the changed title, because this is the only pressbook from it we have ever seen. Note that this pressbook has a stamp on the inside back cover that indicates it came from the legendary horror/sci-fi collection of Ron Borst (the stamp reads "FROM THE COLLECTION OF Ronald V. Borst")! Also note that we have provided an image of the front and back covers of this pressbook (if the back cover is not the poster page, we photographed the interior poster page), and of course, the winner of this auction will receive the entire single pressbook we are auctioning (plus any supplements or heralds described above)! Also note that this pressbook is complete and uncut! Given that theater owners received pressbooks partly in order to create their newspaper advertising, and quite frequently cut them up for that purpose, it is rare to find a pressbook that IS complete and uncut!

Condition: very good to fine, NO CUTS. The pressbook is complete and uncut. It has minor wear on the outer paper cover but is otherwise in wonderful condition!
