An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded French One-Panel "Grande" Movie Poster (1p; measures 44 1/2" x 62 1/4" [113 x 158 cm]) (Learn More) Drole de drame (released in the U.S. in 1939 as "Bizarre Bizarre" and in other English-speaking countries as "Marcel Carne's Drole de Drame"), the classic 1937 Marcel Carne French farce black comedy (about a formerly wealthy French couple who go to great lengths to keep their cousin from knowing they have lost their money, and now write detective novels under a pseudonym, and through a series of misunderstandings, the cousin thinks the husband has killed his wife, which causes them to have to go on the run from the police!) starring Francoise Rosay, Michel Simon, Jean-Pierre Aumont, Louis Jouvet (billed siimply as "Jouvet"), Nadine Vogel, and Jean-Louis Barrault. Note that this movie was widely acclaimed at the time of its first release, and for decades later, but sadly, it is now mostly only known by major film buffs, which is unfortunate, because it is a wonderful movie! Finally note that IMDb says the original title of this movie is "Drole de drame ou L'etrange aventure de Docteur Molyneux", but we have not seen it referred to in that way NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Cecchetto Important Added Info: Note that this poster, which is a "country of origin" poster for this French movie, is beyond rare! For the reasons noted below, virtually no French posters from this time survive, especially from major titles made in the late 1930s. Of course, it is very unfortunate that the poster was printed on the back of another poster, and that there is major bleed-through from the poster on the back, but this is the only first release French poster we have ever auctioned, and it might be an incredibly long time before we auction another. And of course, a talented restorer can do wonders with repairing the defects that the poster has! Also note that this movie was released in France in 1937, when there was a massive paper shortage due to World War II. Many posters at that time were printed on the back of other posters, or sections of other posters. This particular poster was printed on the back of part of another larger French poster. Because it was printed on the back of another poster, it shows through in various parts of the poster (mostly as a sort of light "ghosting"). See our images of both sides to see how this poster is affected. Condition: poor to fair. The poster is printed on the back of part of another poster (see above). As noted above, there is major bleed-through from the poster on the back, and the poster has significant condition issues as well. While a talented restorer can certainly "rescue" this extremely rare poster, it will surely need considerable paint restoration, so bear in mind its defects, the cost of restoration, and that it will have a "heavily restored" look after it is restored, before you bid on this poster.
