An Original 1934 (from the first release of this movie in France) Vintage Theatrical Folded French Large Movie Poster (31x47; measures 31 1/2" x 47" [80 x 119 cm]) (Learn More) Lucky Devils, the 1933 Ralph Ince Hollywood movie stuntman action romantic melodrama ("A thrill-romance of Hollywood's death defying stunt men") starring William Boyd (billed as "Bill Boyd"), Dorothy Wilson, William Gargan, Lon Chaney Jr. (billed as "Creighton Chaney"), Bruce Cabot, and Roscoe Ates. Note that this was Lon Chaney Jr.'s third credited role (under his real name), and he was surely not billed on any of the movie paper for this movie or the earlier two, but we have seen a lobby card from this movie where he is pictured! Note that Lon Chaney Jr. did not like living in the shadow of his ultra successful father, Lon Chaney Sr., and he did not appear in movies during his father's lifetime. After his father passed away in 1930, Chaney started appearing in movies under his real name of Creighton Chaney (including in this movie), without much success. In 1935, a producer convinced him that it would pay off royally if he would change his name to Lon Chaney Jr., and under that name, he starred in this movie! But that did not lead to much better roles until 1939, when he played Lenny in "Of Mice and Men", and received fantastic reviews. But once again, his career did not take off, until he starred in "The Wolf Man" in 1941, and that led to a very successful series of Universal horror movies! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is an extremely rare pre-World War II French poster, which we have never auctioned before! Virtually no French posters survive from before, during, or right after World War II. Apparently there were many paper shortages in France during World War II, resulting in the destruction of almost all pre-World War II posters! Note that this poster was printed in 1934, at a time when France was undergoing a severe paper shortage (as was most of Europe). So they would take older unused posters, and print new posters on the backs of them! In this particular case, this poster for "Lucky Devils" was printed on the back of the top half of a French one-panel for "Rasputin, Damon Der Frauen" (1932). We have provided images of the front and back, although of course, the winner of this auction will receive the single "Lucky Devils" poster (which has half of the other poster on the back, as shown). Condition: fair to good. The poster has separation and tiny paper loss at some of the crossfolds and some pinholes and tears around the edges, with a few pinholes scattered in the image. The printing from the back (see above) somewhat shows through to the front in the light colored areas. Please read all of the above and look at our super-sized image before bidding on this incredibly rare poster. Learn More about condition grades
