An Unfolded German Travel Poster (measures 24 3/4" x 40" [63 x 102 cm]) (Learn More)

Oberammergau: Jeu de la Passion (released in the U.S. as "Oberammergau: Passion Play"), the 1934 German travel poster (with a French tagline that translates to "Germany invites you!") encouraging French-speaking people to visit Oberammergau, Germany to enjoy its passion play. The Oberammergau passion play (about the death and resurrection of Jesus) was first performed in 1634 and it is the result of a vow made by the inhabitants of the village that if God spared them from the effects of the bubonic plague, they would perform a passion play every ten years. The story goes that after the vow was made, no one else contracted the plague and those already sick recovered. The play is now performed in years ending with a zero, as well as in 1934 which was the 300th anniversary and 1984 which was the 350th anniversary (though the 1940 performance was cancelled due to the onset of the Second World War in 1939). It involves over 2000 actors, singers, instrumentalists and technicians, all residents of the village. Also, note that this poster was created by the Reichsbahnzentrale fur den Deutschen Reiseverkehr (RDV). The RDV was a company founded by the Deutsche Reichsbahn (also known as the German National Railway) to promote German tourism (both domestic and foreign) by train.
Artist: Jupp Wiertz

Condition: good. The poster has slight discoloration scattered in some areas from exposure to moisture. There is minor separation in the lower right edge of the right vertical foldline. There is some paper loss in the upper two crossfolds. Certainly the poster could be restored and linenbacked and it would look great, but please bear in mind its defects and cost of restoration before placing a bid.
