German poster created by Deutsche Aids Hilfe to educate people about the consequences of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) which causes AIDS (Acquired ImmunoDeficiency Syndrome) and how to protect themselves from the disease. Deutsche Aids Hilfe (DAH) was founded in 1983 and is now the head organization of 100 German regional AIDs prevention organizations. Note that when AIDS gripped the world in 1981, local authorities, healthcare providers and governments quickly created health posters as a way to inform people about the new disease. These public health campaigns continue to this day, and the posters show the different tactics, images (some quite provocative) and messages used by various countries and health agencies in their attempts to educate people about the AIDS/HIV threat. Around 1,000 new cases of AIDS are diagnosed in Germany every year. However, of the total 84,700 people infected by the HIV virus, it is estimated that some 12,600 do not know about their infection. Approximately 60,700 HIV-infected people are also receiving antiretroviral treatment, indicating that almost 11,000 HIV-infected people know about their infection but do not take medication. But if diagnosed and treated in time, no HIV case must develop into AIDS, which only develops when the HIV virus has caused serious damage to the immune system. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is the last of only very few AIDS poster of East German origin after the fusion with West German AIDS Hilfe. Also, note that the 175 refers to Paragraph 175, which was a provision of the German Criminal Code from 1871 to 1994 which made homosexual acts between males a crime. The Nazis broadened the law in 1935 and in the prosecutions that followed, thousands died in concentration camps as a widespread social persecution of homosexuals took place. Also, note that this item contains some nudity, so we have placed a white bar over those areas for those who are bothered by such images. Of course, the actual item does not have the white bars.
