Date Sold 3/5/2019Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Pressbook (pb; measures 12" x 18" [30 x 46 cm]; 24 pages). Also included is a herald that has 4 pages (measures 11" x 16"). (Learn More) Palooka (also released as "Joe Palooka" and released in Sweden as "Knockout", where "Palooka" probably was not in their vocabulary!), the 1934 Benjamin Stoloff boxing sports comedy (based on the classic comic strip 'Joe Palooka' drawn by Ham Fisher) starring Jimmy Durante (billed as "Jimmie Durante"), Lupe Velez, Stuart Erwin (in the title role as Joe Palooka), Marjorie Rambeau, Robert Armstrong, Mary Carlisle, William Cagney (older brother of James Cagney; he bore a remarkable resemblance to his famous brother, but after starring in just three movies, he mostly retired from acting and managed his brother's career), and Thelma Todd. What is REALLY cool about this movie is that United Artists hired three great cartoonists to draw special cartoon newspaper ads for this movie, and they were William Steig, Otto Soglow, and Dr. Seuss (long before his books, but he signed his work as Dr. Seuss!). NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Dr. Seuss, William Steig & Otto Soglow Important Added Info: Note that this pressbook is extremely rare. We have never auctioned it before! As noted above, this pressbook has lots of cartoon art by Dr. Seuss, William Steig, and Otto Soglow (we have only pictured some of the pages, but we wish we could have pictured them all) Also note that when studios would prepare pressbooks they would often include a sample of the herald. Most often, the herald is no longer still with the pressbook. Sometimes, the herald by itself will sell for almost as much as the rest of the entire pressbook! This pressbook contains the original herald that was included with it, and it is pictured (both sides) next to the pressbook below. Note that we have provided several images from this pressbook, always including the cover and the poster pages, and of course, the winner of this auction will receive the entire single pressbook we are auctioning (plus any supplements or heralds described above)! Also note that this pressbook is complete and uncut! Given that theater owners received pressbooks partly in order to create their newspaper advertising, and quite frequently cut them up for that purpose, it is rare to find a pressbook that IS complete and uncut! Note: We have 13 images of the pressbooks in this set, but due to a space limitation, only TEN of the 13 images are displayed above. However, there is a "supersize" link to the right of those images that lets you see the other 3. Note that we are auctioning 74 pressbooks in this Part II of our March Major Auction. 62 of those come from a single collector who was attempting to assemble EVERY pressbook from movie serials that were based on either comic book or comic strip characters, and he spent many decades doing so, and he came very close to getting every one there is! These include many that we have never auctioned in all our years of auctioning, and may well never auction them again! This is a very rare opportunity for collectors to acquire these ultra rare pressbooks (which are even more rare than the posters from these same serials, likely because they were sent to very few theaters, and likely most of those theaters immediately threw them out). If one started to try to assemble a similar collection without purchasing any of these pressbooks, they would likely spend many years before they could acquire even a small percentage of them. That is how rare these are! Condition: good, NO CUTS. The pressbook is complete and uncut. It is folded across the middle. The covers were separating at the spine and someone put clear tape on the spine, and also a few other clear tape repairs. Some of the pages are rippled due to exposure to moisture. We could re-fold it for shipping, but it seems a shame to do so, so we will only do so if the new owner requests that we do so. Learn More about condition grades
