An Autographed Letter (measures 7" x 10 1/2" [18 x 27 cm]) (Learn More) Charlton Heston (born John Charles Carter) was a major leading actor from the 1950s to the 2000s. He is best remembered for his starring roles in the two great 1950 religious epics Ben-Hur (winner of the Best Actor Academy Award for this film) and The Ten Commandments, as well as scores of other movies including: Touch of Evil, Planet of the Apes, Hamlet, The Big Country, Tombstone, Three Musketeers, Soylent Green, Julius Caesar, and El Cid. Late in his life, he became head of the NRA, promoting gun rights. He passed away in 2008 at the age of 84. He had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, and died from pneumonia. Important Added Info: Note that this letter has been personally autographed (signed) by Charlton Heston (he signed it "Chuck")! Also note that this auction also includes the printed envelope this item originally came with! Note that this still was consigned to us by legendary collector/dealer Marty Davis! Marty was hired in 1972 to evaluate the entire collection of W. Ward Marsh (1893-1971), who was the film critic for the Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper from 1919, until his retirement in 1970. In 1919 Marsh wrote his first of 23,000 movie reviews for the Plain Dealer. Marsh died less than a year after his retirement in 1970. His library, and photographic and memorabilia archives were given to the proprietor of Cleveland's finest bookstore. Marty Davis was the first person with a background in film history and collectibles to examine the archives. He worked for three to four hours a day, for six months, and his compensation was his pick of the archives. This letter is from the W. Ward Marsh archives, and it was sent by Mr. Heston on his personal stationery to Ward Marsh himself, telling Mr. Marsh about what he was currently doing and saying that he "looks forward to seeing him next time he's in Cleveland". Mr. Davis does not have a certificate of authenticity, but the letter and signature are surely authentic. As is true of all the signed items we are currently auctioning, we give every buyer 30 days in which to review what they purchased and they can return any item as long as it is within 30 days of the end of the auction. On non-signed items, we give a "lifetime guarantee" on everything we auction, but on signed items, we give the above modified guarantee of 30 days after the auction closes.
