An Original Vintage Theatrical Unfolded Style Y Forty by Sixty Movie Poster (40x60; measures 40" x 60" [102 x 152 cm]) (Learn More) Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo, the classic 1958 Alfred Hitchcock San Francisco California suspense obsessive love crime mystery thriller ("Alfred Hitchcock's Masterpiece"; "Based upon the novel D'Entre Les Morts by Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac"; "Music by Bernard Herrmann"; about a man with a fear of heights who is caught up in a murder, or is he?, and he meets a woman who looks very similar to the "dead girl", and he becomes obsessed with solving the mystery) starring James Stewart (Jimmy Stewart), Kim Novak (in a dual role), Barbara Bel Geddes, Tom Helmore, and Henry Jones. Note that John Whitney Sr. (who did the spiral title sequence for the movie) also did the spiral art for the posters from this movie, which was utilized by the poster artist Saul Bass. Also note that Alfred Hitchcock did not make a final decision on what to name this movie until the last minute! At various times, it had working titles of Darkling I Listen, Fear and Trembling, From Among the Dead, and Illicit Darkening. Many of the early advertising stills don't have a title at all, but say "An Alfred Hitchcock Production". Personally, we think "Vertigo" is a better title than any of those other four! Finally, note that critical acclaim for this movie has consistently risen in the years since it was first released. In fact, in the 2012 "Sight and Sound" poll of top movie critics, Vertigo was declared to be the number one film of all time, over Citizen Kane, and every other masterpiece! We have never auctioned a 30x40 either, and these two posters are not dominated by Saul Bass art, but have quite a bit else in them, making them even more rare and unusual. Obviously, this poster has REALLY major condition problems, especially the fact that it is heavily faded, but just that it survives is remarkable! The new owner can choose to have any level of restoration performed, but please bear in mind its current condition before bidding. Condition: poor to fair. The poster was displayed and it faded very substantially. It has paper loss in the bottom left corner, but fortunately, only blank white and solid yellow paper was affected. It has a tape stain in the top of Stewart's hat and two to the right of it in the background above the bridge, where a snipe was once surely attached. There are creases and scuffs scattered throughout, more so around the edges, with paper loss in the top blank corners and a 4" tear in the right of the top border, extending into the background, and a 2" tear to the left of that. Someone put cloth tape on the back of those two tears and also put two pieces of tape on the back of tears in the bottom border, but otherwise no attempt at any restoration. Obviously, this poster has really major defects. There are three choices in how to proceed. One would be to simply display it as it is. Another would be to do some restoration to the obvious defects, but leave the fading alone. The third would be a full restoration, which would involve painting over all the background areas to make them look like they originally did. How to proceed will be the choice of the new owner of this incredibly rare poster. Learn More about condition grades
