An Original Vintage Theatrical Unfolded Jumbo Window Card Movie Poster (WC; measures 22 1/4" x 28" [57 x 71 cm]) (Learn More)

The Gay Divorcee, the 1934 Mark Sandrich romantic musical dancing comedy ("The King and Queen of 'Carioca'"; "Introducing the new dance sensation 'The Continental'"; "The stage hit of two continents... ten times a gorgeous on the screen!"; "Right now the whole United States is whistling its gay, enchanting tunes!"; "The music marvel of the stage - 10 times as gorgeous on the screen"; "With the stars of 'Flying Down to Rio'"; "A screen version of the spicy comedy that kept New York and London in stitches for two seasons... with three members of the original cast."; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; about a woman staying at a resort until her divorce is final, and a man who is also staying there who is madly in love with her) starring Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Alice Brady, Edward Everett Horton, Erik Rhodes, Eric Blore, and Betty Grable. Note that this movie was based on the Cole Porter play titled "Gay Divorce", but oddly, only one of the songs from the play was used in the movie. One of the original songs in the movie was "The Continental", which won the first Best Song Academy Award! Also note that Erik Rhodes was a Broadway stage actor who had a great minor part as a heavily accented European in the stage version of this movie, and he was brought to Hollywood to recreate that role in this movie version. Over the next five years, he made a couple dozen film roles, almost always playing a similar part, which was kind of funny, since he was actually from Oklahoma, but he was an expert in "foreign" accents. He served in World War II, and then returned to the Broadway stage, and never made any more movies.

Important Added Info: Note that this poster was printed by the "Central Show Printing Company" of Iowa. In the 1930s, a constant headache for theaters was being sure of having movie posters for their current releases. Often, the posters would travel with the actual film prints, and sometimes the theater before them might have forgotten to include the poster, it might have been defaced or torn, etc. If a theater didn't have posters, it was very frustrating! Several companies began in the 1930s (Leader Press, the "other company", Woolever Press, The Globe Poster Corp., Central Show Printing Co., etc) that made posters of their own for new releases, and they would provide a back up for theaters in case they didn't get a studio issued poster. In the case of this company, they also made jumbo window cards! It is an absolute fact that posters from these companies are far more rare than the regular studio issued posters. It is also a certainty that these posters were issued when the movies were first released (this poster has "SUN. OCTOBER 28" on it, which fell in 1934).

Note that this item needs to be shipped in an oversized flat package. If it is a size that might ordinarily be rolled in a tube (like a half-sheet), the reason it is in this auction is specifically because we feel it either CAN'T be rolled or because we feel it would be a mistake to roll it, because it might well damage the item. In the case of the few items that could be rolled, we will roll the item in a tube if the new owner insists, but only if they accept that they can't return the item if it is damaged from being rolled. So please bear in mind that this item must be sent in a LARGE flat package (the size of the package will depend on the size of the item), and bear this added expense in mind before placing a bid on it.

Condition: good. There are stains and smudges around the edges. There are some faint smudges and scuffs scattered throughout the image, with stains in the bottom right corner of the image (see our image).
